Agnes M. King, 102, Carthage

CARTHAGE, NY — Agnes M. King, 102, widow of Vincent M. King of Carthage, died peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019, at the Carthage Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing.

Agnes was born in Alpena, MI, on Jan. 21, 1917, the daughter of Francis and Anna (Kirchoff) Walchak. She was the Alpena Winter Sports Queen in 1936. She met her “King” in Alpena and they later married in Gouverneur on July 28, 1938. They moved to Carthage in 1940. They taught tap dancing in their home and ballroom dancing in Carthage and various towns in the area. She and Vinny were very active in the community putting on minstrel shows at the old Carthage High School and variety shows at the ball diamond for the enjoyment of the people of Carthage. Agnes carried a lot of the weight of these shows since her husband worked full time for the New York Central Railroad as well as being Mayor of Carthage for 10 years and Town Supervisor. Agnes was the behind the scenes wizard of these events. They were also active in St. James Catholic Church and Augustinian Academy. Vincent died on June 23, 1992.

Agnes’ birth family consisted of three brothers and three sisters, all deceased. Mrs. King’s survivors are her two children, Sharlene Todd (Richard) of Lake Bonaparte and son, James King of Carmichael, CA. She also has four grandsons and four great grandchildren.

As Mom had written many years ago, “Alter this notice any way you please. I’ll be enjoying my life with the Lord – hopefully!!”

In respect of Agnes’ wishes, there will be no calling hours. There will be a private graveside service in the spring at St. James Cemetery, Carthage.

Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home.
