Denis J. Amyot, 66, Hammond

HAMMOND, NY — Denis J. Amyot, 66, of Mill Street, Hammond, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2018, at Crouse Hosptial, Syracuse, NY.

Born Aug. 29, 1952, in Alexandria Bay, NY, a son of Louie and Claudia LeBrun Amyot, he was a 1972 graduate of Hammond Central School.

Denis married Marie LaFazia on July 11, 1984, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Hammond, NY, with Rev. Lawrence Cotter, Rev. Robert Decker and Rev. Douglas Decker, officiating.

He was a custodian at Hammond Central School for 25 years.  Denis also worked for Miller Environmental Group, during the “Slick of ‘76”, after the NEPCO 140 spilled 300,000 gallons of crude oil into the St. Lawrence River.  Clean-up of the oil was primarily accomplished by intensive hand labor, through power-washing shorelines and hand cutting and hauling contamined underwater and marsh vegetation.

Denis was a member of the Hammond Fire Department and the Chippewa Bay Fish & Game Club.

He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and he enjoyed golfing, bowling, shooting hoops, watching ESPN, fishing and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Marie; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Rita Ford, Plano, TX, Claudette and Peter Leonard, Annapolis, MD; numerous, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

His parents, a sister, Louise Smallwood, and a brother-in-law, Robert Ford, died previously.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 47 S. Main St., Hammond, with Rev. Christopher Carrera, officiating. Family and friends will gather at the church immediately following services.

Burial of the cremains will be in Fineview Cemetery, Hammond, NY, at a later date.
