Harold J. Doney Jr., 83, Clayton

CLAYTON, NY — Harold J. (Muggs) Doney Jr., 83, died Tuesday, June 26, at Hospice of Jefferson County. Calling hours will be held noon to 2 p.m. Friday, June 29, at T.R. Jetty Funeral Home in Clayton, followed immediately by the funeral service at 2 p.m.

A burial will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery following the service.

Muggs was born April 23, 1935, in Watertown, the son of Harold and Evelyn Rivers Doney. He attended Watertown City Schools.

He married the former Shirley Hogan on Nov. 15, 1953, at the Clayton United Methodist Church, with Rev. Solomon A. Card officiating.

Shirley passed April 20, 2016, at age 81.

After High School, Muggs entered the United States Air Force, serving from 1953 until he was honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1965. After a year in the Reserves, Muggs worked for the New Jersey Army National Guard as Large Engine Mechanic at Fort Drum. He retired in 1990 after 18 years of service.

Besides being a family man and a jokester, Muggs enjoyed deer hunting, and duck hunting. He loved fishing, playing cards, especially Poker, and enjoyed gambling.

After his retirement he fixed cars for many people.

Surviving are three children, Dierdra (Gene) Sorrell, Mark (Lisa) Doney, and Harold (Rip) and Michelle Doney, all of Clayton; ten grandchildren; four great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Cynthia Singer, died April 26, 1985 at age 29. A grandson, Jeffrey, and also two brothers, Alfred and Richard, all died before him.
