Harry R. Smith, 94, Henderson

HENDERSON, NY — Harry R. Smith, 94, Henderson, passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, at his home under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

Calling hours will be held 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville. There will be no funeral service.

Born June 9, 1924, in Watertown, a son to Floyd and Elsie Heaslip Smith, he was educated in the Henderson School District.

He married Iva B. Nichols in Watertown on July 8, 1945. They moved to Henderson in September of 1961. Mrs. Smith passed away Oct. 6, 2006.

Harry owned and operated a farm and later went to work as a heavy equipment operator for Henderson Highway Department.

He is survived by a son and his wife, Stephen and Sherena Smith, Adams; a daughter Sherry Fowler, Woodville; grandchildren, Tiffany, Christine, Stepheny, Alexander, Cathryn, Brandon, Connor, Casey; four great-grandchildren; and his brother Ross Smith.

Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his two brothers, Dewey R. Smith, Gene Smith; six sisters, Edith Smith Richmond, Helen Smith Rendleman, Eleanor Smith, Joyce Smith, Joan Smith Hamilton and Shirley Smith.

He was a volunteer fireman for Henderson Fire Department for 40 years and a former member of the Henderson Universalist Church.

Their door was always open to anyone in need, they would take in children so they could finish school in the Henderson Central School.

A reception will be held at the Henderson Fire Department on Friday following the calling hours.
