Hazel Mae Olmstead, 90, Glenfield

GLENFIELD, NY – Hazel Mae Olmstead, who formerly resided on Greig Road, was cared for by her daughter (Barbara) and granddaughter (Amy) in Utica for the last five years.

Hazel passed away peacefully with her children by her side on Friday,  December 21, 2018.

Mrs. Olmstead, the daughter of the late George and Nina (Durdan) Haney was born in Rome, NY on August 11, 1928.  She attended school in Remsen, NY.

She was united in marriage to John M. Olmstead on Sept. 24, 1960, in Remsen, who had passed on March 12, 1966.

Hazel worked for Kraft Foods in Lowville and retired in 1992. After retirement she became a caregiver at Brookside Senior Living Community for the next few years following.

She was a member of the Glenfield United Methodist Church and Glenfield United Methodist Women. Hazel’s hobbies included sewing, being outdoors, and gardening.­­­­­­

She is survived by her four children, Barbara A. Gates of Utica; Larry J. Olmstead of Watertown; Mark M. (Renee) Olmstead of Brantingham; and Georgianna Ferebee of Clarksville, TN; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded by her son, Richard Brown, 1975; her daughter, Cindy Snyder 1991; and her grandson, Jesse Snyder 1990; two brothers, Arthur and Jesse Haney; four sisters, Lena May Haney, Gladys Williams, Cora Broadbent, and Florence Button.

Her funeral service will be 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2018, at the  Sundquist Funeral Home. Calling hours for family and friends will precede the funeral from 3 to 7 p.m.

Spring burial will be in Old Glendale Cemetery.
