Leona E. Pennock, 94, Great Bend

GREAT BEND, NY – Leona E. Pennock, 94, formerly of the Jackson II Road, died Tuesday morning, January 2, 2018 at the Country Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, where she had been a resident since 2013.

Leona was born on December 19, 1923 in Carthage, New York the daughter of the late Oliver & Ruby E. (Smith) Gordinier. In 1941 she graduated from Gouverneur High School. She worked in the restaurant business as a cook, bar maid and waitress for 30 years in St. Lawrence County areas, including Morristown and Gouverneur, and in Jefferson County; Carthage and Watertown. She also worked for the Officer’s Club in Fort Drum for eight years. Her most recent job was working in the Cafeteria at the New York Airbrake in Watertown, retiring in 1976 due to a disability.

She was a past president of the VFW Post #7227, Carthage; an Auxiliary Exempt member and also assisted her late husband, who was the Chaplain of the Jefferson County Fire Police; life member of the Great Bend Fire Department; Auxiliary member of St. James Catholic Church in Carthage. She was a past member of the Woolworth Memorial United Methodist Church in Great Bend.

On February 3, 1941 she married Leon C. Barlow in Natural Bridge. The marriage ended in divorce in 1971. Leon died in January of 1989. She then married Francis E. Pennock on December 23, 1978 in Champion, officiating by the Justice of St. James Church. Francis died in January of 2015.

She is survived by four sons, Oliver W. Barlow, Carthage; Gary G. Barlow, Carthage; Gilbert C. Barlow, Carthage; and David W. (Claudia) Barlow, Bixby, OK; a daughter-in-law, Judy Barlow, Herrings; She is also survived by a sister, Linda E. Towne, Carthage.

She is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is predeceased by a son, Leon C. Barlow; a daughter, Donna L. Ennis; a grandson, Gary G. Barlow; great-grandson, R.J. Passage, and a great-great granddaughter, Aubrey Barlow and three sisters, Thelma Marcellus; Oneita P. Barnett, and Muriel A. Slate, three brothers, Oliver G. Gordinier, Merrill K. Gordinier , and Llewellyn M. Gordinier and several daughter-in-laws, Karen, Sue, and Neila Barlo.

She enjoyed Bingo, cooking, and most of all spending time with her family.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 5, 2017 from 4-6 at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service Inc., 500 State Street, Carthage. A funeral service will immediately follow in the Funeral Home Chapel at 6 PM, with Father Donald Robinson officiating. Services will be followed by a reception at the Carthage American Legion Post #789. All are welcome. Burial will be held in the spring in the New St. James Catholic Cemetery.
