Barclay: Drop Pay Raise Talk

Media Release

WATERTOWN, N.Y., Jan. 24
— Today Will Barclay, candidate for 48th Senate District, came out in opposition to the idea of a pay raise for State Legislators that has been proposed by State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Governor Eliot Spitzer.

"I cannot support a pay raise for legislators at a time when New York is facing a $4.4 billion budget deficit. With a slowing economy, and the average person on the street being squeezed from every angle, this proposal should be dismissed outright," said Mr. Barclay.

The Assemblyman went on to say that, "the Governor could not see fit to make good on his earlier promises to deliver property tax relief but has no problem giving state legislators a pay raise. The fact that this is even being discussed by the Governor and the Speaker of the Assembly at this juncture speaks volumes as to just how out of touch they are with the views of hardworking New Yorkers."

Mr. Barclay is calling upon Governor Spitzer and the Democratic leadership in the Assembly to end this discussion right now and focus on how to solve the fiscal challenges facing the state.
