Marjorie
Sands, 86, of County Route 194, died Friday afternoon, Feb.
1, at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.
Born Jan. 16, 1927, in Gouverneur, the daughter of John Leo
and Pearl Rosanna Bouchard Fortune, she graduated in 1945
from Gouverneur High School.
She married George R. “Rusty” Sands on Sept. 14, 1947,
at St. James Catholic Church in Gouverneur. Mr. Sands died
Feb. 24, 2010.
Mrs. Sands was employed as a telephone operator in
Gouverneur, Fort Drum and the Watertown Daily Times. She
retired as a switchboard operator from the Watertown Daily
Times after twenty years, and was elected as the Antwerp
Town Clerk where she also worked for twenty years. Upon her
retirement she was elected to the Antwerp Town Board until
her resignation November 2012 due to ill health.
She was a member of the Antwerp Legion Auxiliary Post #916
and a communicant of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church,
Philadelphia.
Mrs. Sands loved to play cards with her sister and her
friends.
Surviving are four sons and two daughters-in-law, John and
Amy, DeKalb Junction, James, Philadelphia, Joseph and Karen,
Antwerp and Jeffrey and Sandra, Philadelphia; two daughters
and a son-in-law, Julie Farr, Antwerp and Jeanette and Scott
Tooker, Saranac Lake; a sister, Alice Wood, Philadelphia; 16
grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law,
Edward Rossi, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and several nieces and
nephews.
Three sisters, Elizabeth Palmer, Catherine Morrow and Marion
Evans, all died before her.
A funeral mass will be said 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9,
at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Philadelphia with Rev.
Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Burial will be in St.
Michael’s Cemetery, Antwerp.
