Doris E. Vrooman

ALEXANDRIA BAY, N.Y.  — 
Doris Elizabeth “Betty” Vrooman, 92, formerly of Alexandria Bay, died Saturday, Feb. 4, at her home in Baldwinsville under the loving care of her family and Hospice.

Born July 26, 1919, in Kingston, N.Y., the daughter of Joseph F. and Dorothy Miller Sahloff, she graduated from Bethlehem Central High School in Delmar, N.Y. She then attended Hartwick College and completed her registered nurse training at Edward Meyer Memorial in Buffalo.

Betty married Eugene M. Vrooman on July 31, 1944, in Selkirk, N.Y.  Mr. Vrooman passed away Nov. 16, 1985.

She worked as a school nurse teacher, registered nurse, and motel and cottage owner at Pinehurst on the St. Lawrence and Rock Ledge Motel, both in Alexandria Bay, NY,  between 1955 and 1990 when she retired.

She was a member of the Reformed Church of the 1000 Isles, Pitcher Hill Community Church in Syracuse, the Kings Daughters, Alexandria Bay Chamber of Commerce, Alexandria Historical Society, Nurses Club, and a Lifetime Member of the PTA. She was a former Cub Scout Den Mother and was also an organizer and cook for church suppers and Rotary Club dinners.

Surviving are her sons and their wives, Stephen Jon and Paula Vrooman and Rev. Robert Gordon and Betty Lou Vrooman; her daughter, Judith Anne Vrooman Larson; and her grandchildren, David Aaron Vrooman, Jason Andrew Vrooman, Jared Leopold Larson and Kathryn E. Vrooman Larson. 

A son, David Joseph Vrooman, and a brother, LTJG Joseph Gordon Sahloff USNR, both died before her.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Reformed Church of the 1000 Isles, with Pastor Scott Nyp officiating.
