Bertha A. Schroeter

BLACK RIVER, N.Y.  —  Bertha A. Schroeter, 94, formerly of 178 Maple St., died Friday at Country Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Carthage, where she had been a patient since March. Prior to entering the nursing home, she had been a resident at Angel's Inn, Watertown, for the past six years.

Born March 20, 1914, in Black River, daughter of Orin and Mary Loomis Elmer, she graduated from Black River High School in 1934 and attended Baptist Institute Christian Workers, Philadelphia, Pa.

She also studied religious and early childhood education in Hartford, Conn., and Western Springs (Ill.) and Decatur.

Mrs. Schroeter was a kindergarten teacher in the Watertown City School District beginning in 1958. She worked in several schools and retired from Sherman Street School in 1974. She worked in various jobs in the Watertown and Carthage area before beginning her teaching career.

She returned to Black River in 1850 to care for her parents.

She married Dr. George Schroeter in October 1975. Dr. Schroeter was a well-known foot specialist in Bronxville and New York City area and carried on his practice until his death at age 90 in October 1985. 

The following year, Mrs. Schroeter returned to Black River to reside with in the home that had been in her family for over 60 years. She remained there until she entered Angel's Inn in January 2002.

She was a former member of Kamargo Association and enjoyed gardening, reading, needlepoint and crafts.

Surviving are a stepson, Dr. Gerald Schroeter, two stepdaughters, Claire Dame and Barbara Orser and their families; cousins, Ruth M. Knutty, Sally Knutty-Ritz Barkley, both of Mesquite, Texas, and former residents of Black River, Carlton Elmer and his wife, Shirley, Watertown; and many second- and third-generation cousins.

A brother, Vernon, died in infancy.

There are no calling hours. Burial will be held in the family plot in Black River Cemetery.
