Leigh E. Andrews

WATERTOWN, N.Y.  —  Leigh E. Andrews, 79, of Sarasota, Fla., and formerly of Watertown and Sackets Harbor, died Monday, May 12, at his home.  

A memorial service and Masonic service will be held 1 p.m., Friday, May 30, at Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, Watertown, with Rev. Beverly Bibbins, officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery at the family’s convenience. 

Instead of flowers, contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Sarasota County, 2331 15th Street, Sarasota, FL 34237.

Born March 3, 1929, the son of Charles E and Thelma LeRoy Andrews, he graduated from Fulton High School and earned his bachelor of science degree from the State University of New York at Oswego and a master of education degree from St. Lawrence University. He obtained New York State certification in school counseling and public school administration. He served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1954. 

He married Betty R. Green on Aug. 29, 1959, at Emmanuel Congregational Church, Watertown, with Rev. Walton D. Moffitt, officiating

After teaching in Adams and Dryden, he and his wife moved to Watertown, where he was employed as a school counselor and later as administrator at North Junior High School and South Junior High School. Upon his retirement in 1985, he was vice-principal at Watertown High School. 

Following retirement, he worked as coordinator for the Cooperative Boards of the Tug Hill Council and was also supervisor and assessor in the town of Boylston until 1996. 

Mr. Andrews was past president of the Watertown Teachers Association, and served on the board of directors of Hospice of Jefferson County, Inc. and had been an active member of the Rodman Masonic Lodge. 

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Sarasota, Sarasota Masonic Lodge Number 147, Sahib Shrine, Stephens Ministry and the Ringling Museum Association. 

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Jonathan L. Andrews, Richmond Heights, Mo.; a brother and his wife, Kenneth and Shirley Andrews, Cleveland, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. 

The couple has resided in Sarasota since 2000.
