Helen L. Wieczerzak

NEW BREMEN, N.Y.  —  Helen L. Wieczerzak, 81, formerly of the Artz Road, died Friday morning, May 16, at Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility where she had resided for three years.

A funeral Mass will be said 10 a.m. Monday, May 19, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Houseville with Rev. Christopher J. Looby, parochial vicar, officiating. Burial will follow at Beach’s Bridge Cemetery, town of Watson.

Family and friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at the Sundquist Funeral Home, 7676 State St., Lowville. 

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Memorial Processing Center, 6725 Lyons Street, P.O. Box 7, East Syracuse, N.Y. 13057-0007.

Born Sept. 30, 1926, in the town of New Bremen, daughter of Cassius and Lola Plopper West, she attended local schools. 

She was employed by Kay and Art Shaw for eleven years in West Lowville as a waitress at Shaw’s Restaurant. She later retired from the housekeeping department at the Lewis County General Hospital in 1980, with 17 years of service. 

A marriage ended in divorce.

Mrs. Wieczerzak was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Croghan. 

She was a lifetime member of the Lewis County Memorial Post #6912 VFW Auxiliary, a member of the American Legion Post #162 Auxiliary, and a member of the Senior Citizens Club in Port Leyden. 

She enjoyed being outdoors playing softball in her younger years and was an avid Yankee baseball fan. She also loved to play bingo.

Surviving are a son, David and his companion, Pauline Bauer, Lowville; a daughter and her husband, Kay F. and Lawrence Washburn, Santa Ana, Calif.; a brother, Maynard, Glenfield; a sister, Gladys Collins, Watertown; two grandchildren, Lawrence “TJ” Washburn II and Alexa and Mark Wyneken; nieces and nephews. 

Three brothers Henry W., Richard, Bernard, and two sisters, Doris Robinson and Irene Hoch, all died before her.
