— Byron L. Allen, 88, of State
Route 12, and formerly of Trinity Avenue Extension, died
Monday, May 19, at his home.
The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday, May 22, at Iseneker
Funeral Home, Inc., 5702 Waters Road, Lowville, with Rev.
Marcia Wickert, pastor of the Lowville United Methodist
Church, officiating. Burial will be in the West
Lowville Rural Cemetery. There will be a calling hour
from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 22, prior to the funeral
service.
Instead of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lewis
County Residential Health Care Facility, Attn: Activities,
7785 N. State Street, Lowville, N.Y. 13367.
Surviving are a son and his wife, Philip W. and Sue
Allen, Hastings; a daughter, Constance S. Allen, Syracuse; a
brother and his wife, Cecil and June Allen, Lowville; a
sister, Helen A. Cody, Otter Lake; five grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his wife, who died Aug. 21, 2006; a
son, Jerry Lee Allen, who died in a motorcycle accident in
1969; two brothers, Lester and Elmer Allen; and a sister,
Shirley Seymour.
Born June 12, 1919, at Rectors Corners in the town of
Montague, a son of the late Daniel A. and Edith Rogers Allen,
he graduated from Lowville Academy in 1936.
Mr. Allen worked on area farms as a teenager.
On Jan. 18, 1941, he married his high school sweetheart,
Maxine A. Bellinger, daughter of Glenn and Pearl B.
Bellinger, at her parents’ home in the Town of Harrisburg.
Together with his wife, the couple owned and operated a
dairy farm on State Route 177 from 1942 to 1968, upon moving
to Trinity Avenue Extension in Lowville. Mr. Allen
worked as Office Manager for Countryside Veterinary Clinic
from 1968 until retirement in 1984.
He was Justice of Peace
of the Town of Harrisburg for 25 years, a president of the
Lowville Academy and Central School Board of Education for
ten years, and caretaker of the West Lowville Rural Cemetery
for 20 years.
Mr. Allen was a 25 year member of the Harrisburg Grange.
He was a member of Lowville United Methodist Church, and
West Martinsburg United Methodist Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Allen loved to travel, and were avid gardeners.
He will be sorely missed by all of his friends in this
community, and many he met in his travels. He will
always be remembered and loved dearly in the hearts of his
family.
