Guyton, 89, formerly of Cooper Street, Watertown, passed May
21, at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home where she had
been a resident.
The funeral service will be 11:30
a.m. Friday, May 24, at Hart & Bruce Funeral
Home. Burial will follow in North Watertown Cemetery.
Calling hours will precede the service from 10
Born Dec. 24, 1923, in Watertown, the daughter of the late
Benjamin H. and Laurine Fraley Bates, she graduated in
January 1942 from Watertown High School.
She then went to work at the Agricultural Insurance Co. from
1942 to 1977 and then worked for New York Casualty Company
which later became known as the Phoenix General Insurance
Company from 1977 to 1986, retiring in 1986.
She married Albert W. Guyton, originally from Georgia, on
Oct. 27, 1945, at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, while
he was serving with the Army at Pine Camp.
The couple resided on Cooper Street up until 2004. She then
resided with her daughter and son-in-law.
Mr. Guyton was a truck driver for several local companies.
He died in May 1987.
Among her survivors are two sons and their wives, Alan
Guyton of Watertown, and David and Suzanne Guyton, Lockport;
a daughter, Anne L. Wallace, Watertown; a brother and his
wife, James and Kathleen Bates, Clayton; a brother-in-law
and his wife, Charles and Mary Ellen Barrett, St. Cloud,
Minn.; 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, nieces and
A son, James W. Guyton, died in 2006, a daughter, Lynne
Shettleton died in 1999, a brother, William Bates died in
1996, and a sister, Marilyn Barrett died in 1996.
She enjoyed knitting and spending time with her
grandchildren and great grandchildren.
