Nancy L. Oakes

CARTHAGE, N.Y.  —  Nancy L. Oakes, 75, formerly of 63 Madison St., West Carthage, died Wednesday evening at the Country Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, where he had been a resident since this January.

Born Nov. 28, 1932, in Carthage, daughter of John L. and Myrtle R. Genzel Rice, she graduated from West Carthage High School in 1950. She worked in the offices of St. Regis Paper Co. and Climax Manufacturing, both in West Carthage. 

She married Richard D. Oakes on March 13, 1971, at the United Community Church in Carthage. He died in 1990. 

Mrs. Oakes enjoyed bowling, playing the piano and knitting and she was very active in sports in her youth and still continued watching sports, especially the games of her grandsons.

Surviving are two daughters, Julie Daniels, Watertown, and Lori Oakes, Troy,  stepchildren, Geary D. Oakes, Salt Lake City, Utah, Terry F. Oakes, Scottsdale, Ariz., Larry M. Oakes, New York City and Carrie M Bacon, Tampa, Fla.; two grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, several step-great-grandchildren; three nieces, two nephews; and a sister and her husband, Winifred E. and Daniel E. Burns, Carthage.

Besides her husband, she is predeceased by a brother, Robert J. Rice.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, at the United Community Church, State St., Carthage, with the Rev. Jane Wagner, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Champion. 

Calling hours will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 2, at the Bossuot-Lundy Funeral Home, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage.
