— Alton I. “Ivan” Whitehill,
88, died Monday, June 2, at Lewis County Residential
Healthcare Facility, where he had resided for the past two
years.
The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at
South Ryegate Presbyterian Church, Route 302, South Ryegate,
Vt., with Rev. Dr. M. Catherine Cook, pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow in Pinehurst Cemetery, South Ryegate, Vt.
There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are with Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.
Born March 31, 1920, in Newbury, Vt., a son of Ernest F. and
Estella Farley Whitehill, he moved to New York in 1976.
He was a skilled and dedicated worker in several trades. Mr.
Whitehill worked in farming, logging, construction, as an
electrician, beekeeper and carpenter. He worked 16 years at
the granite quarries.
Mr. Whitehill was known as a jack of all trades, with an
uncanny knack for problem solving, and a very strong work
ethic, which he instilled in his children. He was most proud
of his work on the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., as well as
the homes that he built.
He
was an avid year-around hunter, loved working with horses,
and watching his crops and cattle grow.
Mr. Whitehill was a great story teller, and loved to pass on
and share his knowledge.
He loved bright-colored flowers and enjoyed playing
practical jokes.
Survived by his wife of 62 years, Pearl; a son, Richard A.
Whitehill, Lowville; four daughters and their husbands,
Evelyn J. and Jim Burtnett, Silver Spring, Md., Susan L. and
Keith Ricker, Scottsdale, Ariz., Nancy L. and Freddy Perez,
Silver Springs, Md., and Connie and Ron Pridell, Lowville; a
brother and his wife, Norman F. and Linda Whitehill, Groton,
Vt.; three sisters, Mildred Richardson, Cornish, N.H., Viola
Noyes, Peacham, Vt., and Evelyn Shields, Groton, Vt.; nine
grandchildren, Pam Dressel and her husband, Don, James
Burnett, III, Aaron Ricker, Kyle Ricker and his wife, Karen;
Jacquelyn and Nicole Perez; Tyler, Rachel and Shawn Pridell;
three great-grandchildren, Ocean, Chloe, and Jet; several
nieces, nephews and cousins.
Three brothers, Arnold, Bruce and Austin Whitehill, and a
sister, Isabelle Washburn, all died before him.
