Sylvester A. MacKee

CARTHAGE, N.Y.  —  Sylvester A. "Vet" Mackee, 83, 253 State St., Apt. 1, died Tuesday morning at the home of his niece, Tammy Mackee, 338 South Washington St, while under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County. He had been ill with cancer.

Born Sept. 19, 1924, in Carthage, the son of Harry and Ada Champion Mackee, he attended schools in Carthage.

He served in World War II, enlisting into the United States Army in 1943. He was assigned to the 3rd Armored Division, 36th Armored Infantry Regiment, Company E. His campaign included Northern France, Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes, the Battle of the Bulge and Central Europe. He was a military policeman in occupied territory. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Combat Infantry Regiment Badge, M-1 Rifle Expert and the Distinguished Unit Citation.

Sylvester was a member of the Carthage American Legion, Bassett-Baxter Post #789, enjoyed hunting and fishing and was well known throughout the community of Carthage, where he did volunteer work and grounds maintenance and landscaping.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 23, in the Chapel of the Bossuot-Lundy Funeral Home, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage, with the Rev. Bruce W. Chapman officiating. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Carthage. Calling hours will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening, June 22, at the Funeral Home.
