Irene D. David

CARTHAGE, N.Y.  —  Irene D. David, 81, of State Route 126, died Thursday morning, June 19, at her home, under the care of her family and Lewis County Hospice. 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., 5702 Waters Road, Lowville,  with Rev. Bruce W. Chapman, retired Methodist minister, and Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, pastor of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan, co-officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan. There will be no calling hours.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas M. and Kathleen Tooker, Carthage; two daughters, Susan E. Zehr of Camp Verde, Ariz., Terre E. Gelling, Carthage; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Elma D. Hershey, Lowville; Jolan and Alexander Shimkonis of Watertown; Helen and Eugene Wagar of Queensbury; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.  

She is predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and John David and two sisters, Mary Szarka and Gladys Magdesy.  

Ms. David was born on August 1, 1926 in Premier, West Virginia, a daughter of the late John and Julia Emru David and graduated from Copenhagen Central School in 1945.  She worked for Crown Zellerbach, Cathage, before her marriage.  

In September, 1946, she married John M. Tooker at Carthage Methodist Church.  The marriage ended in divorce.  

She worked for Beaverite Products, Beaver Falls in the art department from 1960-1970 and worked for Co-operative Extension in Watertown from 1970-1980.  She worked as a cook at Sacred Heart Rectory, Watertown, then at St. James Rectory, Carthage, for 11 years, retiring in the early 1990’s.  She enjoyed ceramics, painting and drawing.  She had a ceramic shop in her home. 

She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, landscaping and the company of her cats.
