Frederick C. Stoddard

CARTHAGE, N.Y.  — 
Frederick C. Stoddard, 96, of Route 26, died Sunday, July 6, at Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility under the care of his family where he had been a resident for the past two years. 

Born February 28, 1912, son of Carl D. and Lillian M. Bridgen Stoddard in Lyme, he attended High School in Copenhagen. 

He was a logger in Manchester, Vt., and in the Adirondacks. He entered the Army in 1942. He was a tank driver during the Battle of the Bulge. He was a driver for General Patton during his enlistment. He received many war awards including, American Service Medal, Eame Service Medal; Good Conduct Medal, and the World War I Victory Medal. He was also a light weight boxer during World War II.

He married June A. Brotherton on Feb. 28, 1942, in Carthage. She died March 26, 1995. 

Mr. Stoddard worked at Fort Drum for 34 years as a heavy equipment operator. 

He was a Life-time member of the Bassett-Baxter American Legion Post #789, Carthage, and life-time member of the Lowville VFW. 

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and he enjoyed woodworking, and he loved his camp in Brantingham.

Surviving are his daughter; Anne Merrill, Executive Director of the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce, Lowville; and a grandson, Scott G. Bloss, an architect at Daly Pos firm in Syracuse.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Linda June, who died in 1943, a son, Donald Frederick Stoddard, who died in 1972, and a brother Orvis Stoddard who died in 1940.

Calling hours will be held 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at the Bossuot-Lundy Funeral Home Inc., 500 State St., Carthage. The American Legion will conduct a service at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. A funeral service will be follow in the Chapel of the Funeral Home at 5 p.m. with Rev. Linda J. Harris, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Carthage. Burial will follow in the Black River Cemetery with full military honors.
