Lansing D. Roggie

CARTHAGE, N.Y.  — 
Lansing D. Roggie, 83, Sayre Road, died on Saturday afternoon, July 19, at Carthage Area Hospital. 

Born June 7, 1925, son of Joseph and Eliza Oash Roggie, formerly of Germany, he was employed in farming, then retired from Climax Manufacturing Co. after 35 years of service as an oiler. 

He enjoyed gardening, bird and deer watching at his home on the Sayre Road for 51 years. He also enjoyed cutting wood with his 1945 John Deere Tractor he purchased from Joe Widrick and formerly owned by the Rev. Lloyd Boshart. He later sold "Big John" to an antique dealer.


He married Alfreda M. Widrick on May 12, 1948, at the Croghan Mennonite Church in a double wedding with his brother Elvin and Alfreda's sister Ellen, with the Rev. Lloyd Boshart officiating. Ellen and Alfreda's parents were Ben and Alma Widrick of Croghan.

Surviving are his wife, Alfreda; four sons, Timothy, Carthage, Lynn, Castorland, Jerry and Brian of Pennsylvania; a daughter, Sharon Ogden, Carthage; and nine grandchildren.

Mr. Roggie was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, two sisters and a grandson Adam, who died at the age of 12.

Calling hours will be held 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, at the Naumburg Mennonite Church. Burial will take place 10 a.m. Wednesday at Croghan Mennonite Cemetery followed by a memorial service and luncheon at the church at 11 a.m. All are welcome to the reception.
