Dorothy V. Green

WATERTOWN, N.Y.  —  Dorothy V. Green, 98, died Thursday, March 7, 2009, at James Square Nursing Home, Syracuse, where she had resided since 2006. She was formerly of Watertown, Dexter and Brownville.

Mrs. Green worked as a seamstress for Shaugnessy and Olga knitting mills, sewing uniforms and shirts for soldiers during World War II. She also had been a department head for Sears, Roebuck and Co., worked in a library for three years and was manager of a hat shop. She then was a state civil servant for 30 years, working for the state Department of Transportation. She was treasurer and founding member of the Civil Service Employees Association Credit Union, which she operated from her home for eight years. The credit union was moved to a formal office with the opening of the Dulles State Office Building. She retired as treasurer at age 95.

Born July 25, 1910, in Carthage, eldest daughter of Melvin and Minerva Norton Clukey, she was of Native American heritage from the St. Regis Mohawk Confederation, Akwesasne Indian tribe. As a young girl, she raised a black bear that she named Betty. The bear later was determined to be a male and was donated to the Thompson Park Zoo.

She graduated from L.C. Quinn High School, Tupper Lake, in 1928, from the Watertown School of Commerce in 1948 and from Jefferson Community College in 1986 with an associate degree in business law and political science.

She married Gilbert Drew on May 14, 1929. The marriage ended in divorce in 1950. Mr. Drew died March 18, 1995. She married Albert Dacier in 1956. The marriage ended in divorce in 1962. Mr. Dacier died June 8, 1989. She married Fred C. Green on Dec. 22, 1962. Mr. Green, a Watertown firefighter for 30 years, died Dec. 7, 1977.

She was a lifelong member of the American Legion and Eagles Club and survived a battle with cancer in 1969.

Surviving are a son and  his wife , Kenneth and Sheila Drew, Watertown; three daughters and a son inlaw, Dolores Roy and a predeceased spouse Roger , Watertown, Keitha Abbott and her predeceased spouse Bill Syracuse, and Gloria and Don DeVito, Dallas, Texas; a sister, Barbara V. and Wayne Morgan, Redwood; with 27 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A son, Gerald Drew, and a brother, William Clukey, died before her.

Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc.  A prayer service will be held 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A funeral Mass is tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Saint Patrick’s Church with Rev. Donald Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery

In place of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in Dorothy’s name.
