Mafalda
“Mae” Dileta Lorenzini Howley, 99, passed away
Thursday, Nov. 8, at the Lewis County Residential Health
Care Facility, surrounded by her loving family and the
wonderful staff of the 4th Floor.
Mae was born Sept. 25, 1913, in Betula, Pa., a daughter of
Giuseppe and Giovanna Lorenzini After moving to Lewis
County, she attended Lowville Free Academy and Banford
Academy Beauty School, New York City, graduating in 1932.
Mae was then employed by Ethel’s Beauty Shop in
Lowville.
She married William J. Howley on Oct. 15, 1932, at St.
Mary’s Rectory in Glenfield with Rev. George Brison
officiating.
Together, with her husband, they owned and operated Central
Hotel in Glenfield from 1938 to 1962 and also owned and
operated Timber Lodge from 1952 to 1976. She also worked in
the library at St. Peter’s Catholic School during the
1970s.
Mrs. Howley was a member and communicant of St. Mary’s
Catholic Church in Glenfield.
One of her greatest joys in life was dancing with her
husband of 67 years.
She was an avid bowler and member of a league at Lewis
Lanes; was a fan of Tiger Woods, who played golf herself and
enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles.
Surviving are her children: Joan C. Whalen, Goodyear, Ariz.,
Michael D. and Susan Howley, Chandler, Ariz., Judith
(McLaughlin) Marmon and husband, Bill, Port Leyden, Bethany
M. Hoffman, Massena, and Anne Howley-O’Brien, Richland,
Mich.; a daughter-in-law, Carol Howley, Elmira and
Brantingham; two sisters-in-law, Ellen Lorenzini,
Brantingham and Lea Howley, Oswego; 29 grandchildren; 49
great-grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Bill, who died in 1999, Mrs.
Howley was predeceased by her son, Philip W.; a son Joseph,
who died in infancy; three sons-in-law: Dominic “Bud”
Whalen, Dr. J.C. “Charlie’ McLaughlin and Leonard
Hoffman; her three sisters: Theresa Ely, Angeline Meda
MacKeller and Margaret Burdick; four brothers: Anthony,
Floriano, Hector and Virgil Lorenzini and a great-grandson,
Andy Whalen of Hawaii.
A funeral mass will be said 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at
St.Peter’s Catholic Church with Rev. Christopher Carrara
officiating. Burial will be in Old Glendale Cemetery.
Family and friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at
Sundquist Funeral Home. A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m.
