WATERTOWN, N.Y.     Donald J. Doane, 89, formerly of 17481 Route 11, Watertown, passed Sunday, Dec. 23, at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home where he had been a resident since 2009.

A memorial service with military honors will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, Watertown.

Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery in Sackets Harbor.

A calling hour will precede the memorial service on Friday from 10 to 11 a.m.

Born July 15, 1923, in the town of Pamelia, son of Levi W. and Winifred E. Gibson Doane, he graduated in 1942 from Watertown High School. During high school he also attended technical school.

He worked for New York Air Brake a short time before entering the Army on Jan. 7, 1943. He served during World War II in France, England and the Bay of Normandy. He was honorably discharged as a tech sergeant in 1946.

Upon returning home he returned to New York Air Brake and worked in the shipping and receiving department, retiring in the early 1980s after 35 years of service.

He married Alice Cross of Watertown on May 12, 1971, in the town of Limerick. She passed in 2011.

Mr. Doane was a member of the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Watertown where he was the sexton for eight years.

Among his survivors are a step daughter, Kathryn G. Matteson, Watertown; three stepsons and their wives, Steven and Bethany Cross, Henderson, Daniel and Cassandra Cross, Watertown, Lawrence and Bertha Cross, Missouri; a brother and sister in law, Raymond and Betty Doane, Evans Mills; a sister, Marie Gould, Watertown; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

A sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Harold Spencer, a brother, Robert Doane and a brother-in-law, Gerald Gould, all died before him.
