Roland
C. Demers, 91, formerly of Maiden Lane, Great Bend, died early Sunday Morning, Dec. 30,
at The
Country Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in
Carthage where he has been a resident since November.
Born May 31, 1921, in Montreal Quebec, Canada, the son of
David and Agnes LaLonde Demers, he moved to the Newton Falls
area as a child where he attended Newton Falls
Schools.
Mr. Demers served in the United States Navy from June 17,
1940, to August 1948. He then joined the Naval Reserves in
Watertown which he retired from the military in 1977.
He married Josephine Turpin on January 19, 1946 at the St.
Rita of Cascia Catholic Church, Deferiet, with the Rev. Alex
Clairmont officiating.
He was employed by the St. Regis Paper Co, for 35 years,
retiring in 1983.
He was a member of St. Rita of Cascia Catholic Church,
Deferiet Senior Citizens. He was also a member of The Felts
Mills American Legion Post #1502, Fleet Reserve Assn. of The
United States Navy.
Surviving are two sons, Roland, Baldwinsville, and Dennis
and his wife Peggy, Liverpool; two daughters and their
husbands, Joanne and Michael Coleman, Port Orange Fla., and
Christine and Paul Sherbino, Redwood; a brother, Leon
Demers, Tonawanda; five grandchildren, a step-granddaughter,
11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and
cousins.
He was predeceased by his wife, Josephine, who died in 2008,
and a sister, Jane Saber.
Calling hours will be held 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, at
the Scherer Funeral Home., 500 State Street. A funeral Mass
will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at the St. Rita of
Cascia Catholic Church, Deferiet. Burial will follow in the
Black River Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by the Scherer Funeral Home,
Inc., 500 State St., Carthage.
