Jane E. Deline

June 29, 2014

WATERTOWN, N.Y.  —  Miss Jane E. Deline, 91, passed on Saturday, June 28, at her home, 190 Thompson Blvd.

She was born Dec. 19, 1922, in Carthage and was the only child of Marcella Colligan Deline and Roland J. Deline. She graduated from St. Lawrence University and Syracuse University, BA and MSA, before starting her career as an educator, teaching at U.S. schools in Germany, Japan, Australia, and Venezuela followed by returning to Watertown where she taught chemistry and physics at Watertown High School for a number of years.

In retirement, her love of travel took her to Russia, China, Israel, Tasmania, Norway, the Arctic Circle and included extensive tours of Canada and the United States.

Jane’s most visible support of the community was the Old Newsboy Salvation Army Fund Raiser, the Deline Family YMCA and the Carthage Area Hospital.  In addition to these visible entities, she quietly cared for and supported many people and organizations when they needed help to overcome obstacles to achieve their goals.

Surviving relatives are her first cousins, Thomas R. Colligan of Annandale, Virginia and Edward W. Colligan, Watertown. The Colligan families include their wives and six second cousins to Jane Deline. Although Jane had a number of close friends in Watertown and in Northern New York, she had one very special friend in Mrs. Nancy McConnell of Theresa. Over the years as Jane declined in health and mobility, the need for caregiving/nursing increased dramatically. Nancy remained loyal and dedicated to Jane to meet this need.

Friends will be received 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, at D. L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. at 135 Keyes Ave., Watertown. A funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, July 3, at the funeral home with Rev. Donald Robinson officiating. Jane will be interred at the Deline family plot in Brookside Cemetery.

Charities in memory of Jane Deline include the Carthage Area Hospital, 1001 West Street, Carthage, NY 13619 and the Salvation Army, 723 State Street, Watertown, NY 13601.
