STOP-DWI impaired driving crackdown in Jefferson County runs May 25-29

WATERTOWN, NY — Jefferson County STOP-DWI announced Thursday that Jefferson County police agencies will participate in a special enforcement effort to crackdown on impaired driving.

The statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown efforts start on May 25 th and will end on May 29th. Memorial Day is one of the busiest travel holidays of the year and marks the traditional start of summer. New York State Police, County Sheriffs and municipal law enforcement agencies will collaborate across the state and will be out in force in this coordinated effort to reduce the number of impaired driving-related injuries and deaths.

The Memorial Day Holiday starts a season filled with graduation, weddings, golf tournaments, and other celebrations with family and friends This combination of factors equates to more people on the road in general and more people specifically driving impaired. “Our message is simple”, said Rick Barrisford, Jefferson County STOP-DWI Coordinator. “Enjoy the summer season; but plan ahead and always keep safety in mind, … Don’t drive impaired by alcohol or drugs.”

As part of the New York State STOP-DWI Enforcement Crackdowns, Jefferson County STOP-DWI will be working with Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, New York State Park Police, and Watertown City Police Department in their efforts to protect everyone from impaired drivers either by alcohol and/or drugs during this busy time of year.

The STOP-DWI Memorial Day Weekend Crackdown is one of many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by the New York State STOP-DWI Association with additional funding from the STOP-DWI Foundation courtesy of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

The Statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign also targets the 4th of July, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Holiday Season, Super Bowl weekend and St. Patrick’s Day.

Highly visible, highly publicized efforts like the STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign aim to further reduce the incidence of drunk and impaired driving.
