Syracuse man, 37, killed in Lewis County snowmobile crash

MARTINSBURG — Lewis County sheriff’s deputies investigated a one-person fatal snowmobile crash that occurred early Friday, March 1, on Rowsam Road/Trail C5H in the town of Martinsburg.

Around 2:41 a.m., Britt Sherlock, 37, Syracuse, was operating a 2017 Polaris Pro-S 800 snowmobile northbound on Rowsam Road and went off the left side of the trail and struck a tree, deputies said. He was then ejected and struck another tree, deputies said.

Sherlock was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another operator in the party, Christopher Squires, 30, Syracuse, was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a class “E” felony, illegal possession of a vehicle identification number, a class “E” felony, unauthorized use of a vehicle, a class “A” misdemeanor and operating a snowmobile without insurance or registration.

The charges stem from Squires allegedly operating a 2004 Ski-Doo MXZ Adrenaline 600SDI that was reported stolen in the town of DeWitt in January 2015 and subsequently has the VIN defaced, deputies said.

He was arraigned in Martinsburg Town Court and sent to the Lewis County Jail with bail set at $750 cash to await further court proceedings.
