Alexander M. Shimkonis, 99, Watertown

WATERTOWN, NY — Alexander M. “Shunny” Shimkonis of Ives St. Watertown passed away early on Jan. 4, 2022, at his home. He was 99 years old.

Alex was born on Nov. 21, 1922, the son to the late Stephen and Stella Shimkonis.

He is survived by his wife of 75 years Jolan David, and several nieces and nephews.

Alex married Jolan David on Aug. 3, 1947.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his six siblings, Olga and Dan Buckington, Ann and Corney Shay, Helen and Bill Gregory, Youlanda and Floyd Hamilton, Steve and Alice Shimkonis and his youngest brother Joseph Shimkonis who was killed on D-Day in 1944 at Normandy.

Alex attended Watertown High School leaving to join the US Navy, November 1942-1946. While in the Navy he was a Gunnery Instructor before deploying aboard USS Plunkett DD 431 and USS Livermore DD429 as a Gunner’s Mate.

While serving in the Navy Alex received many awards, Victory Medal, American Theatre, European-African Middle East, Asiatic-Pacific and Good Conduct Medal.

Alex worked at the New York Air Brake as a core maker, Black Clawson as a molder and completed his working years from the US Postal Service.

Alex was an avid fisherman, hunter and enjoyed spending time with his nephews.
