David R. Burgess, 74, formerly of Clayton

CLAYTON, NY — David R. Burgess of Fredericksburg, VA and formerly of Clayton, NY, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021, In Walter Reed Hospital, Bethesda, MD.

David was born on May 20, 1947, the son of Ross and Betty Gould Burgess. He was a 1965 graduate of Clayton Central High School where, in addition to academics, he was active in music and multiple varsity sports. He then attended the University of Idaho, earning a Masters degree in engineering and a commission in the United States Navy.

Specializing in undersea defense systems, David built a stellar career of almost 30 years in the Navy. He retired as a Captain, after which he continued in the same profession, consulting with the governments of both the United States and Australia.

David understood the true meaning of “duty, honor, country,” and he practiced these values with quiet dignity. He spurned self-aggrandizement and sought only the simple privilege of serving the needs of others. The world is a lesser place without him in it.

David is survived by his wife of 16 years, Margarita (Maggie) and stepdaughter Cassandra (Casi) Demming; daughter Stacy Mayo (Jason), grandchildren Jeremy Burgess, Nicholas Provau and Cory Provau (Ally), great grandchildren Braxton Burgess, Jaxon Burgess, and Wesley Provau; sisters Janet B. Sullivan (Gary) and Sally Jo Burgess; uncle Alan Gould; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents.

A celebration of life was held on Nov. 19, 2021, in Falls Church, VA.
