DEC postpones Mt. Arab Fire Tower ‘First Day’ hike due to inclement weather

 St. Lawrence County Hike Rescheduled for Jan. 25, 2020

WATERTOWN, NY — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced that the Mt. Arab Fire Tower ‘First Day” hike is being postponed due to inclement weather. The hike is rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 25. Southeastern St. Lawrence County is having a significant ice storm with snow and high winds expected. DEC assessed the trail and found conditions are already bad, with trees and limbs down. Based on the forecast, conditions will continue to deteriorate.

What: Mt. Arab First Day Hike, moderately difficult two-mile round-trip hike.

NEW Date: January 25, 2020

Where: Trailhead parking area, located on the Mt. Arab Road

Time: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Directions: From NYS Route 3 (near Piercefield), turn onto Conifer Road. Follow Conifer Road for almost two miles to Mt. Arab Road, on the left. Follow Mt. Arab Road for about one mile to the parking area on the right. Mt. Arab Parking Area and Trailhead for the Mt. Arab fire tower (44.213689°N, 74.596110°W) Google Maps (leaves DEC website).

Participants must dress appropriately for winter hiking conditions. Snow shoes or crampons may be useful. Bring water, snacks or anything else you may need for a hike. Pets are allowed but must always be leashed and under the control of the owner.
