Doris Hirschey Steiner, 99, Lowville

LOWVILLE, NY — Doris Hirschey Steiner, 99, of Brookside Circle, Lowville, passed away early Monday morning, June 10, 2019 at the Lewis county General Hospital.

Born Jan. 18, 1920, the daughter of William and Julia Hunziker Hirschey, Doris grew up on a farm on the Ridge Road in Castorland, NY. After her elementary years in a two room schoolhouse in Castorland, she attended Lowville Academy and upon graduation went to Watertown School of Business.

She earned $8 a week at her first job with District Attorney Dudu. Room and board in Watertown cost her $5 a week, so even though she loved her job, after one year she moved home and started work in the office at the Climax where she worked until her marriage to Norbert Steiner of Beaver Falls in 1941.

Doris attended the Apostolic Christian Church in Naumburg and Norbert the church in Croghan; they met through youth group activities. Norbert and Doris were active members of the church for their adult life; Norbert became a minister and then an elder of the Croghan church.

Norbert and Doris operated a farm on the Cut Off road in Beaver Falls until 1973 when they retired and built a house on the Cross Rd. They spent time in the log cabin that Norbert built on the Long Pond Road, and they enjoyed many years of traveling around the country in their motor home until Norbert passed away suddenly in 1989.

Three years later Doris moved to Brookside in Lowville. She was one of the first residents at Brookside and resided there until her death.

Doris was predeceased by her parents and three siblings: Harold Hirschey, Blanche McIntyre, and Lucile Schwendy.

She is survived by two daughters, Terri Hoch (Richard) of Lowville and Brenda
MacDonald (John) of Bennington, VT; four grandchildren, Rebecca Hoch Kauffman (Bill) of Beaches Bridge, Andrew Hoch, Durango, CO, Leah MacDonald Moore (JJ) of Canaan, NY and Shannon MacDonald Mabey (Robert) Wallingford, VT, and 6 great grandchildren.

Doris enjoyed playing the organ, cross stitching, quilting, jig saw puzzles, playing Upwords and dominoes, and in her nineties started playing games on an iPad.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 14, 2019 at the Apostolic Christian Church of America, Croghan. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 13, 2019, at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.
