Elsie M. Countryman, 66, LaFargeville

LAFARGEVILLE, NY —  Elsie M. Countryman, 66, of County Route 13, LaFargeville, passed away, Wednesday morning, Oct. 16, 2019, at SUNY Upstate University Hospital, Syracuse, NY.

Born Oct. 22, 1952, in Alexandria Bay, NY, a daughter of Clarence E., Sr. and Clover Davis Smith, she graduated in 1970 from Alexandria Bay Central School and later she obtained an Associate Degree in Social Work from the University of Phoenix.

Elsie married Lyle O. “Butch” Countryman at the Philadelphia United Methodist Church on November 1, 1970 with Rev. Blankenship, officiating. Honor attendants were Leonard and Kay Countryman.

Over the years, “Miss Elsie” worked at LaFargeville Central School in the cafeteria and with the Advantage Program.  She also worked for Yazell’s Restaurant, Alexandria Bay, NY and was Past President and active member in the LaFargeville American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Elsie and Lyle’s first priority was taking care of each other and she enjoyed playing Yatzee, Canasta and Hearts with Joan Recor, bingo, crocheting and spending time with family and friends, especially with the grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Lyle “Butch”; four children, three sons and three daughters-in-law, Lyle, Jr. and Linda Countryman, Concord, NC, Joshua John and Bonnie Countryman, LaFargeville, NY, Adam and Bridget Countryman, New York Mills, NY; a daughter and son-in-law, Twila and Jeffery Smith, LaFargeville, NY; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild and one on the way;  sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Wendell Putnam, NC, brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Jacinta Wood, LaFargeville, NY; a brother and sister-in-law, Floyd “Pete” and Virginia Smith, Cape Vincent, NY, her twin sister, Ethel Longway, Clayton, NY, brother, Joseph Smith, MD, sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and Dave Thompson, FL; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret “Maggie” and Richard Dubuque, Alexandria Bay, NY; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her parents and two brothers, Clarence Smith, Jr. and Lloyd Smith, in infancy, died previously.

A Celebration of Elsie’s Life will be noon Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019, at the LaFargeville American Legion Post No. 1788.
