Four injured after Syracuse-bound coach bus catches fire on I-81 in Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, NY —  On April 29, 2021, just before 2 p.m., a New York State Trooper from the TIM unit (Traffic Incident Management) was on Interstate 81 in the town of Barker when she observed a charter bus on fire.  Troopers from SP Whitney Point also responded to the scene to assist.

The bus was traveling northbound on Interstate 81 from Long Island to Syracuse.  42 people were on the bus.  Four people were injured; one person transported to Wilson Hospital for burns, two were taken to Binghamton General for smoke inhalation and one person was checked out on scene and did not wish to be transported.

Both northbound lanes were shut down just north of exit 7 (Castle Creek) for a period of time.  At approximately 3:45 p.m., the left lane was reopened.

Chenango, Chenango Bridge and Whitney Point Fire Departments responded to the scene to put out the flames.  Ambulances that responded included Broome Ambulance, Chenago Ambulance, Marathon Ambulance, Union Ambulance and Maine Ambulance.  The New York State Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, DEC, DOT, Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies and Broome County Security also responded to the scene.
