Friends of Thompson Park to conduct clean up day in Thompson Park

WATERTOWN, NY — Friends of Thompson Park, a local volunteer organization, will be hosting one of its monthly Trail Clean Up Days, on Sunday, August 12, 2018 between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Volunteers will be clearing brush along existing nature trails and blazing new trails for the enjoyment of the community.

The Friends of Thompson Park is honored to welcome members of the 10th Mountain Division to our trail enhancement program. This month, soldiers from the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) Program, will join the effort to improve Thompson Park. This program is Soldier-driven, with a foundation in giving single service members an avenue to surface issues and recommend policy changes that will enhance the overall quality of life, to participate in recreation and leisure activities of their choice, and to contribute to and participate in their local communities. This program assist in the development of single Soldiers and leaders.

Other volunteers are welcome and encouraged to participate as well. Volunteers will be dividing up into groups and working under the guidance of members of the Friends of Thompson Park.  Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, clippers, loppers, hand pruners, and hand saws. We will be in the woods so dress in long pants. You can come for an hour or the entire afternoon event.

Volunteers will be working along the Olmsted Trail located in the northeast section of the park and are asked to meet in the park’s main parking lot at 1:00 p.m. or along the trail after that time. The Olmsted Trail is located approximately midway along the North (the entrance near State St.) to the park. Volunteers who plan on participating are asked to send an email to jctpvolunteer@gmail.com prior to the clean up.

The Friends of Thompson Park was formed in 2015 and is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the historic park. Additional trail cleanup days will be held the second Sunday of each month through October. Trail clean up days will be held on September 9 and October 14.
