Gary W. Hammill, 70, Watertown

WATERTOWN – Gary Wayne Hammill, 70, of West Main St., Watertown, and formerly of Carthage, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, Nov. 20, 2020 at the Hospice of Jefferson County Residence in Watertown.

Gary was born on March 22, 1950 in Carthage, New York, son of the late Lawrence C. and Blanche E. (Gaines) Hammill.  In 1968 he graduated from Carthage Central School.  He went on to be employed as a machine operator at the Crown Zellerbach Paper Mill, until retiring early in 1985 due to a disability.

A marriage to Bonnie Phillips ended in divorce.

Gary was an avid collector of Matchbox cars and sports cards.  He also had a great passion for photography.

Survivors include five children, Lawrence Hammill of Black River; Gary Hammill of Carthage; Jerry Hammill of Carthage; Bobbie Jo (Damien) Helton of Ohio; and a daughter from a previous relationship, Holly Brook of Perry, New York; two sisters, Emma Jane Cabaniss and Christine Marie Hammill, both of Texas; as well as several grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He is predeceased by a brother, Martin Joseph Hammill who died in infancy.

No public services will be held.  A graveside service will be held in the Spring at St. James Cemetery in Carthage.
