Helen H. VanAllen, 97, Evans Mills

EVANS MILLS, NY — Helen H. VanAllen, 97, of 214 New Connecticut Rd., Rossie, and formerly of Evans Mills, died early Saturday morning, June 23, 2018, at the Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, NY.

Born Sept. 2,1920, in Theresa, NY, the daughter of the late Beulah Grace Stevens and Fred Duffany, she attended school in LaFargeville, NY. She was primarily a homemaker. Her greatest accomplishment was her children and her family.

She married Almon VanAllen on Nov. 15, 1939. Almon died May 17,1987.

Helen is survived by a companion of 20 years, Morris Lucas, Watertown, NY; several children, Jean Wisner, Russell; Darlene Patchen, Clyde, NY; Lynn VanAllen, Waterloo; Gary VanAllen, Watertown, NY; Mark VanAllen, Watertown, NY; Kathy Hicks, Rossie, NY; David (Nancy), Watertown, NY; Dean (Robbin) VanAllen, Jordan, NY; Barbara Littlefield (Brad) Burtasket, Maine; Wendy Shultis, Watertown, NY; Dale VanAllen, Clyde, NY; a sister-in-law, Lucina Drake, Henderson; 27-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Almon; a son, Fred A. VanAllen, 2012; three son-in laws, Ronald Hicks, 2016; Virgil Patchen, 2013; Larry Wisner, 2015. Two sisters, Mrs. Edson (Yolande) Clark, and Agnes Bates and three brothers, two in infancy, George & Horace and a brother, Donald Duffany; and a sister-in-law, Lorena Wolcott.

She was an active 57-year member of the St. Andrews church in Evans Mills. She enjoyed square dancing especially dancing to Polka music, singing, reading, quilting and making her children clothes when they were little.  She also loved working outdoors and on her family farm, she was known for her famous homemade bread and butter.

A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 29, 2018, at the St. Andrews Episcopal and Presbyterian Shared Ministry Church with, Mother Anne Wichelns, Vicar, officiating, located at 8520 LeRay St., Evans Mills. A celebration of life reception will follow at the Evans Mills Fire Hall. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Northridge Cremation Chapel located on the Town Line Road in Philadelphia, NY. Owned and operated by Lundy Funeral Home. Burial will be held at a later date in the Oakwood Cemetery in Theresa, NY.
