THERESA, NY — Louis V. Amato, 85, of Mill Street, Theresa, passed away Wednesday morning, June 27, 2018, at River Hospital where he had been a patient.
Louie was born on March 2, 1933, the son of Louis A. and Elsa Amato in Manila, Philippine Islands. He graduated from Cairo High School, Cairo, NY, and then from St. Lawrence University in 1955. He served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957.
Louie married JoAnne VanBrocklin on Nov. 24, 1960, at St. Francis Xavier Church in Redwood.
He worked for 33 years total as a teacher, coach, and school administrator, retiring as high school principal of Alexandria Central School.
He enjoyed sports was active as an umpire for softball, baseball, and referee for football, soccer, and basketball.
Surviving are his wife JoAnne, their son Louis (Tricia) Amato, Theresa, and their daughters, Kim (Rob) McGinley, Smithtown, NY, and Tara (long-time companion Charles Penn), Goose Bay, NY; a sister, Judy Benton, Venice, FL; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents and his son, Steven, who passed away May 6, 2018.
Calling hours will be held 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 29, at the Costello Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay. A funeral Mass will be said 10 a.m. Saturday, June 30 at St. Cyril’s Catholic Church, Alexandria Bay, with Fr. Douglas Comstock, officiating. Burial will be at Barnes Settlement Cemetery.
