ALEXANDRIA BAY, NY — Margaret J. “Peggy” Sweet, 81, passed away late Friday evening at Samaritan Summit Village, Watertown, where she had resided for the past two years.
She was born Jan. 4, 1937, in Clayton, NY, a daughter of Wallace and Geneva Jobson Solar. She moved to Alexandria Bay as a child and was educated in Alexandria Bay schools.
She married Jack W. Sweet on Feb. 28, 1954, at the Asbury Methodist Church in Watertown. Mr. Sweet passed away on Sept. 3, 2015.
Peggy managed Pearls Department Store in Alexandria Bay for 18 years and then purchased it, changing the store’s name to “Home Sweet Home”.
She enjoyed sewing, crafting and quilting.
She is survived by six children, Guy Sweet and Kathy Clifton of Cape Vincent, Patricia Sweet of Lowville, Tracy Bartlett and husband Floyd, Theresa, LuAnne Rowsam , and husband Ron, Henderson, Glenn Sweet and wife Kristine, Alexandria Bay, and Greg Sweet and wife Ann, Evans Mills, three sisters, Betty Johnston, Eleanor Kennedy, and Ida Bisnett, grandchildren, Hillary Wolfe, Eliza Fletcher, Cristie Sweet, Aaron Wilson, Shannon Bartlett, Sidney Bartlett, Marte Rowsam, Emily Sweet, Karsen Roethel, and Zoie Sweet, great-grandchildren, Abigail, Aislynn, Andrick, Adeline, Gavin, Gabriel, Greyson, and step
grandchildren Justin, Ryan and Alec.
She was predeceased by a sister, Judy Schulz, a brother, Arthur Solar, and her grandson, PFC Jack T. Sweet.
Calling hours will be held noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the Costello Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Freddie Webb officiating. Burial will be in Barnes Settlement Cemetery.
