New safety lights installed in school zone on Washington Street in Watertown

WATERTOWN, NY — The crosswalk in front of the Watertown City School District’s Washington Street campus just got a little bit safer.

Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons (RRFBs) have been installed on both sides of the crosswalk at the Washington Street and Barben Avenue intersection. RRFBs are warning signals which are user activated by pushing a button located on the side of the road.

RRFBs use flashing amber LED arrays to supplement warning signs at un-signalized intersections and crosswalks.

RRFBs maintain an irregular flash pattern similar to the flashers on police and emergency vehicles, increasing driver awareness.

Watertown’s new RRFB System was installed by the NYS Department of Transportation with the support of the Watertown City Department of Public Works.
