NJ teen accused of leading deputies on 103 mph chase which ended with a vehicle fire at Walmart in town of Watertown

WATERTOWN, NY  —  Rakeem S. Daniels, 19, of 85 S. 16th St., East Orange, NJ, was arrested early Thursday, Dec. 26, by Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies following a high-speed pursuit that ended with a vehicle fire in the parking lot of Walmart in the town of Watertown.

Deputies said Mr. Daniels was operating a 2015 Nissan sedan westbound on outer Arsenal Street at 103 mph in a 45-mph zone with his high beam headlights on at about 12:57 a.m. Thursday.

He is charged with third-degree fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor, speeding 103 mph in a 45-mph zone, speeding 86 mph in a 30-mph zone, failure to comply with a lawful order, failure to stop on a steady red arrow, failure to dim headlights and operating a vehicle without headlamps illuminated.

After being stopped, Mr. Daniels allegedly stated, “I was going like 20 miles per hour. I didn’t do nothing.”

He is ordered to appear Jan. 9 in Town of Watertown Court.

Town of Watertown firefighters assisted deputies at the scene.
