NYSP: Father accused of faking son’s death for monetary donations

NYSP news release

WATERTOWN, NY —  On Oct. 9, 2022, State Police arrested Kaleb D. Stevens, age 30, from Adams, NY, for Grand Larceny fourth-degree, a class “E” felony, and Scheme to Defraud first-degree, a class “E” felony.

Stevens is charged with defrauding, at least two individuals, by soliciting donations (a check for $1000 and $500 in cash) for expenses he incurred for the death of his 4-year-old son. Stevens told the complainants that his son was diagnosed with stage 3 Leukemia and that he passed away on Aug. 4 at St. Jude’s Hospital.  Stevens told co-workers that he needed money for his son’s funeral.

An investigation determined that Stevens’s son was not sick or deceased and that he made up the story to gain sympathy and monetary donations.

Stevens was issued appearance tickets returnable to Jefferson County CAP Court and is scheduled to appear on October 28, 2022, at 5:30 P.M.
