NYSP identify pedestrian struck and killed by vehicle near Chaumont

CHAUMONT, NY —  State Police in Watertown is investigating a fatal car/pedestrian crash that occurred on Oct. 2, 2020, at 7:45 p.m., on State Route 12E in the town of Lyme, Jefferson County.

A 2004 Buick Rendezvous, operated by Joseph G. Haas, age 32 from Chaumont, NY, was traveling eastbound on State Route 12E when a pedestrian, George Sipos, entered the lane of travel. Mr. Haas attempted to stop but was unable to avoid striking Mr. Sipos, troopers said.

The impact caused Mr. Sipos to be thrown and come to rest in the westbound driving lane.

A 2015 Chevrolet Equinox that was traveling westbound was unable to observe Sipos lying in the lane of travel and subsequently struck him, troopers said.

George Sipos, age 83 from Chaumont, NY, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The investigation is continuing.
