NYSP: Man arrested following a traffic pursuit in vehicle stolen from Stewart’s Shop in Lewis County

REMSEN, NY — On March 22, 2021, at 7:35 p.m., State Police patrols in Remsen attempted to stop a 2005 Dodge Magnum on Route 12 that was reported stolen from the Stewart’s Shop located in the town of West Turin, in Lewis County.

The driver, later identified as Aaron Smith, refused to stop and continued to travel south on Rt. 12 towards Utica. Troopers terminated the pursuit in Remsen.

Smith continued to travel on Rt. 12 into the city of Utica. The vehicle was observed striking a guide rail as it exited the Arterial near Oswego Street. Smith then fled from the vehicle on foot.  Officers from the Utica Police Department located him in the area and placed him into custody without incident.

Aaron M. Smith, age 29, from Blossvale, NY, was arrested for the following:

  • Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer  3rd degree, class “A” misdemeanor

  • Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 2nd degree, an unclassified misdemeanor

  • Reckless Driving, an unclassified misdemeanor

  • 13 vehicle and traffic law violations

Smith was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Trenton Town Court on April 19, 2021, at 4 p.m.
