NYSP: Man critical, horse killed, in Orleans crash involving Amish buggy

LAFARGEVILLE, NY —   On August 13, 2022, at 6:33 a.m., State Police responded to an Amish Buggy/Vehicle crash that occurred on County Route 15 near Honey Flats Road in the town of Orleans, Jefferson County.

The preliminary investigation has revealed a 2017 Ford Edge, operated by Troy J. Weaver, age 29, from LaFargeville, NY, was traveling south on County Route 15 when he crested a hill and struck the rear of a horse-drawn Amish Buggy, operated by Samuel A. Hostetler, age 39, from LaFargeville, NY.

Mr. Weaver was not injured in the crash. Mr. Hostetler and a passenger, 21-year-old Mose Hostetler, were both ejected from the buggy. Samuel Hostetler was transported by ambulance to Samaritan Medical Center and then transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse with a severe spinal cord injury and was listed in critical condition. Mose Hostetler was transported to Samaritan Medical Center, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The horse was killed in the crash.

Mr. Weaver was issued a ticket for failure to use due care when approaching a horse, a violation.

The investigation is continuing.
