NYSP: Verizon flagman struck and killed in work zone crash in village of Theresa

THERESA, NY —  State police are investigating a fatal truck/pedestrian crash that occurred on Oct. 13 near 411 Main Street in the village of Theresa, Jefferson County.

A 2010 Chevrolet pickup truck, operated by John Vantassel, 84, Philadelphia, NY, was traveling east on Main Street when he failed to notice a flagman in a work zone holding a portable stop sign, troopers said.

Vantassel subsequently struck the worker, causing him to be dragged underneath the vehicle, troopers said.

The flagman, identified as 38-year-old Alec R. Williamson, was transported to River Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased due to injuries he sustained from the crash.

The investigation is continuing.
