Phyllis D. Bears, 92, West Carthage

WEST CARTHAGE, NY — Phyllis D. Bears, 92, formerly of Bridge Street, and a resident of the Carthage Center, formerly known as Country Manor since, 2007.

Born March 18, 1926, in Carthage, NY, the daughter of the late George Gilbert and Edith Gertrude Johnson Duegaw, she attended Carthage Augustinian Academy.

She owned and operated her own beauty shop on Harper’s Terrace.

A marriage to Richard (Dick) Green ended in divorce.

She married Earl Bears on Aug. 6, 1970. Mr. Bears died in 1998.

She is survived by a son, Richard Green, Arizona; a step-daughter, Gail (Steve) Sylver, Lake Clear, NY; a brother, John (Jack) Duegaw, Virginia; She is also survived by several grandchildren, Jennifer Cartwright, CA;  Michael Ulto, SC; Sara Ulton, CA; two- great-grandchildren, Paula Jean, and Edward, both of CA; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the St. James Catholic Church in Carthage.  She loved camping and her dogs, especially Panda.  She taught dance at Vinnie King’s Dance School on State Street.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, in Fairview Cemetery in Carthage.

She is also predeceased by a step-daughter, Cathy Ulto in 1994.
