Update:
On June 6, 2023, an autopsy was conducted at Canton-Potsdam Hospital on Luigi Cappellino, after Cappellino was transported to Gouverneur Hospital following an altercation with a cellmate on June 5, 2023. The autopsy determined the cause of death to be ligature strangulation, and Forensic Pathologist, Doctor Scott Lapointe has ruled the manner of death as a homicide.

GOUVERNEUR, NY — On June 5, 2023, around 9:19 p.m., State Police responded to Gouverneur Correctional Facility located on Scotch Settlement Road in the town of Gouverneur for an unresponsive inmate within the correctional facility. Inmate Luigi Cappellino, age 26, and Inmate Wilfredo Noe, age 48, were cellmates together when an altercation occurred in their cell. Gouverneur Rescue Squad responded and transported Cappellino to Gouverneur Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
An autopsy is scheduled for today, June 6, 2023 at 3:00 p.m., at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, to determine a cause and manner of death.
State Police was assisted by the NYS Attorney General’s Office, NYSDOCCS Office of Special Investigations and the St. Lawrence County District Attorney’s Office.
Noe remains in custody of DOCCS, as this investigation continues.
