Suspected drugs seized at Cape Vincent Correctional Facility

CAPE VINCENT, NY – An officer processing mailed packages to inmates located over seven ounces of a green leafy substance inside three cans of food at the medium security prison, according to a union news release.

On Tuesday, Dec. 22, the officer was processing a package through the X-ray machine.  He noticed unusual objects inside three cans that were mailed from downstate New York. The cans were opened and inside each can was a cellophane bundle that contained a green leafy substance.

The suspected drugs were seized and taken for additional testing.  The three bundles weighed a combined 7.5 ounces.

“ As we close out 2020,  we again are approaching 4000 pieces of contraband seized at prisons across the state.  That would mark the fourth consecutive year we have exceeded that number.  The majority of that contraband is drugs and despite an excellent job staff does detecting the drugs,  they still make their ways into the hands of inmates on many occasions.  If ever there was a need for DOCCS to implement the Secure Vendor Program in the new year now is the time.” – said Bryan Hluska , Central Region Vice President.
