Three residents of Mountain Community Homes named 2018 WinningEdge scholars

FORT DRUM, NY — Three Fort Drum Mountain Community Homes (Mountain Community Homes) residents have been selected as recipients of the 2018 WinningEdge Scholarship sponsored by WinnCompanies.

Jayden Barrientos, Dominique Torrez and LizBeth Worker were among 48 national winners of the scholarship awarded annually by WinnCompanies, the national property management firm that serves Mountain Community Homes, a Lendlease housing community.

Established in 2012, the scholarship program provides financial assistance to residents who have earned a high school diploma or GED, and aspire to continue their education at a college, university, or professional trade school. Recipients are chosen based on academic performance, character, and proficiency in their chosen field of study.

Jayden Barrientos, a graduate of Indian River High School, will begin his freshman year this month at Leeward Community College in Hawaii where he will study secondary education.

“Winning this scholarship has given me additional support and opportunity to grow and give back in the education system,” said Jayden. “I truly appreciate this and am grateful for the opportunity to be considered for the scholarship”

Dominique Torres, also a graduate of Indian River High School, will attend State University of New York at Newplatz this fall where she plans to major in theater, directing and design. Mountain Community Homes heard from Dominique’s parents who said they were very excited and really appreciated the opportunity for their daughter.

LizBeth Worker, 31, previously a teacher, is now pursing her passion of working in the medical field by becoming a nurse at Utica College in New York. When Mountain Community Homes reached out to Lizabeth to congratulate her, she said with this scholarship she is now able to follow her dream of becoming a nurse without the worries of financial hardship holding her back from her studies.

A total of $37,000 was awarded to WinnCompanies residents nationwide through the WinningEdge Scholarship Program this year. Of the 48 recipients, 23 are residents of military communities managed by WinnResidential Military Housing Services.
