Timothy C. Atkins, 73, Redwood

REDWOOD, NY — Timothy C. Atkins, 73, of Stine Rd., died Wednesday, July 4, 2018 at SUNY Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, NY.

Born April 16, 1945, in Gouverneur, NY, he was a son of Dudley and Mary Campbell Atkins.  He graduated in 1963 from Hammond Central School.

Timothy entered the US Army on Nov. 5, 1965, and was honorably discharged on Nov. 3, 1967.  In 1980 he joined the NY National Guard and began working as a mechanic for the NY MATES, Ft. Drum, NY, retiring in 2005 after 25 years and was deployed during Desert Storm. He also worked for various local trucking companies.

He married Melissa Johnson on Dec. 31, 2004, at their home in Redwood, NY.  A previous marriage to Diane Rogers ended in divorce.

He was a member of the Alexandria Bay American Legion, the former Redwood American Legion, Redwood Historical Society, Redwood Fire Department and he was president of the Rarick Cemetery Association in South Hammond, NY.

Timothy enjoyed working in the garage restoring cars and hot rods and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Melissa; a daughter, Alysia Cole and companion, Donnie Jones, Redwood, NY; a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Jen Atkins, Schnectady, NY; a step-son, James O’Hara and companion, Alicia Cuttrell, Weeki Watchi, FL; a step-daughter, Leslie DiStefano and husband, Chris, Watertown, NY; seven grandchildren; Amanda Dixson and husband, Jason, Plessis, NY, Erica Belt and husband, Cody, Watertown, NY, Tyla Atkins, Schnectady, NY, Jaden Atkins, Schnectady, NY, Nathan O’Hara, Saylorsburg, PA, Vincenzo DiStefano, Watertown, NY and Maria DiStefano, Watertown, NY; three great-grandchildren, Kira Dixson, Brantley McEatheron and Mia Dixson; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Judy Sunderland, Syracuse, NY, Jo-Anne Plummer, Adams, NY, Linda and Richard Bennett, Bridgton, ME; a brother, Nate Atkins, Hammond, NY; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

His parents and two brothers, Andrew Atkins and Daniel Atkins, died previously.

A graveside service with military honors will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 8, 2018, in Redwood Cemetery, Redwood, NY, with his brother-in-law, Rev. Richard Bennett, officiating. Family and friends will gather at the Redwood Fire Hall immediately following services.

Calling hours will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, July 8, 2018, at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, NY.
